The Axum Obelisk Returns Home

The first segment of the Axum Obelisk returned to Ethiopia on 19 April 2005. A huge Antonov 124-100 cargo aircraft that ferried the first segment of the obelisk touched down at the Emperor Yohannes IV, Axum. Many thousands of Ethiopians who welcomed the obelisk expressed their joy by singing traditional music and dancing. The welcoming ceremony was graced by the presence of Minister of Youth, Sports and culture, Ambassador Teshome Toga, Chief Administrator of the Tigrai Regional State, Tsegai Berhe, distinguished guests and more than 20,000 residents of Axum and its surroundings.  

Ambassador Teshome Toga said on the occasion that the return of the obelisk marks the victorious conclusion of the peaceful struggle of the people and government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. He continued, “the return of the historical heritage will have a significant contribution for Ethiopia’s endeavor for sustainable development and prosperity.  

Chief Administrator of the Tigrai Regional State, Tsegai Berhe for his part said that the return of the obelisk is a victory not only for Ethiopians but also for all Africans. He said that Ethiopians across the country should be proud of the return of the obelisk to its home. He also expressed his firm belief that the return of the obelisk would strengthen the unity of the peoples as well as speed up their pace of development.  

The Italian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Mr. Guido La Tella assured the gathering that Italy would provide support for the erection of the obelisk as it did so for its return. (END)
