Efforts underway to expand rural infrastructures satisfactory: Meles

Hwassa, September 17, 2008 (ENA) - Many of rural localities in the country have got telecom and electric services due to maximum effort launched since the last two years, EPRDF EPRDF Chairman said.

During the EPRDF’s 7th regular conference held in Hawassa Town on Tuesday, the chairman Meles Zenawi said 7,000 of the 15,000 the targetd kebeles has got access to the stated service.

The electric access has reached to 20 percent from 17 percent in the last two years alone,.

Meles said the government is has been undertaking wide-ranging activities to increase potable water coverage. Accordingly, the coverage has reached 60 percent now from 30 percent two years ago.

Some 2,000 Km asphalt road and 57 km alleys linking manuy kebeles were also constructed.

Meles said remarkable success registered also in expanding primary education in the rural areas. He singled out Somali and Afar states where education coverage has reached 36 and 44 per cent respectively as exemplary.

He said the general enrollment in primary education has reached 97 percent in 1999 E.C from 91.3 percent in 1997 E.C. The secondary school general enrollment has reached over 40 percent in the reported period.

Meles said the government has planed to increase secondary school coverage to 100 percent by 2012.

The chairman said efforts of expanding health service in rural localities has registered satisfactory results.

He said 3,200 supervisors have been deployed to implement health extension program.

Meles said Business Process Reengineering is being implemented in 40 hospitals to improve the service delivery of the health facilities. (END)
