Addis Ababa, May 20, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - Inaugural
conference of the Addis Ababa City Administrative Council on
Tuesday elected Kuma Demekissa as Mayor, and Kefiyalew Azeze
as Deputy Mayor of the metropolis.
The council
appointed same day Sinkinesh Atane as its Speaker, Elias Seid,
as Deputy Speaker, and Negede Girma as its Secretary.
Ex-mayor,
Birhan Deressa ceremoniously handed over the key of the city
to the incoming city mayor, Kuma Demekissa at the presence of
ministers and other prominent personalities.
After swearing
in ceremony, Kuma addressed the newly-established city council
by appreciating dwellers for voting for the Ethiopian Peoples
Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) during the local and
national by-elections held April 2008.
Kuma said
curbing unemployment through promoting micro and small-scale
enterprises, the problem of housing, and addressing the
existing inflation in the metropolis will be the top most
agendas of the city council.
According to
the mayor, EPRDF will be striving to ensure good-governance
and democratic system across the metropolis in the years
ahead. The mayor calls upon city dwellers on the occasion to
rally behind the city administration in efforts geared toward
bringing about an overall development of the city.
EPRDF won 137
of the 138 seats of the city council, out of which 29 seats
are taken by women.
The council
also is expected to form cabinet and endorse amended bills for
the executive bodies of the city administration. (END) |
