December 25, 2007 (ENA) - The Oromia State Water resource
Bureau announced that it has launched construction of potable
water projects with over 450 million Birr during the current
year.
Bureau expert, Ayana Kelbesa, Speaking at a
meeting held in Jimma town to evaluate activities carried out
over the past six months in the sfe water sector, said
construction of 53 potable water projects has been launched in
14 zones of the state.
Under these projects, development of 494
small and medium springs and sinking of 327 deep and medium
water wells is being carried out, he added.
Among the water projects being carried out
with the budget secured from the government and donor
organizations, drilling of 38 deep and medium water wells has
been finalized in Gursum and Babile areas of east Hararge
zone, Kembebit and Girar Jarso woredas of north Shoa Zone and
Boset woreda of east Shoa zone.
When finalized during the current year, the
water projects would push the dafe water coverage in the state
to 60.5 percent from 58 percent at present, by enabling more
than two million people get access to safe water, according to
the expert.
More than 300 professionals attended the
meeting that evaluated the activities carried out by
governmental and non governmental organizations in the water
sector over the past six months.
