On behalf of the EPRDF Council I would like to wish the
Ethiopian peoples a millennium with bright future and
fundamental change.
Our country has traversed long years of ups and downs to reach
this third millennium. The last few years of the departing
millennium were times when swift economic growth has been
registered and achievements indicative of the bright future of
our country carried out. The age old yokes of poverty and
backwardness are losing their grips as a result of the
effectiveness of our appropriate developmental and democratic
programs and the diligence of our peoples. Our country has
been implementing economic reform unprecedented in its
history. Our democracy has been broadening and deepening, and
is evolving along the direction where it could become
institutionalized culture. The new federal system rooted in
the diversity of our nations, nationalities and peoples has
been growing day by day cementing their unity.
This is an era when countries are closely intertwined
economically and fiercely competing. And victory could be
determined by effectively utilizing the favorable atmosphere
created and developing competitiveness through cultivating the
internally developed democratic system which could withstand
negative impacts. Viewing our country from this perspective,
it is in a position of ably competing in every sector by
adapting to the fast changing international situation. EPRDF
is more than ever ready to consolidate the gains it has
registered coordinating all our peoples in line with the
mandate it was entrusted with by the peoples during the last
years of the second millennium. It is also more than ever
prepared to do a better work by making good use of its
experiences and making the country a burial ground of poverty
and backwardness where democracy expands boundlessly and
mainly benefits the people. I am confident in the full support
and trust of the entire Ethiopian peoples on declaring the
readiness of EPRDF to mobilize all its members and supporters
at home and abroad to realize this lofty objective and ensure
the renaissance of Ethiopia at this historic juncture, new
century and millennium.
