Representative of  National Congress Party of Sudan

  • His excellence Ato Meles Zenawi, Chairman of the EPRDF,

  • His excellence Ato Addisu Legesse, Deputy Chairman of EPRDF,
  • Excellencies and members of the Central Committee of EPRDF,
  • Invited guests,
  • Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am indeed privileged, gratified and honored to address you this evening in this beautiful historical city of Mekele on behalf of President Omer Al-Bushier, Chairman of the National Congress Party of Sudan, members of the Commanding Bureau of National Congress and on behalf of my delegation.

We came here from Khartoum, the heart of Sudan, in this holy month of Ramadan, to express to the leadership and members of EPRDF and through them to the brotherly people of Ethiopia, our prideful support and solidarity while they are conveying the 6th congress of EPRDF. EPRDF was born in 1989, out of the coalition between intellectuals who deserted their universities and their high schools and decided to join hands with the farmers and the peasantry in the rural areas of Ethiopia to fight the oppressive and dictatorial regime of Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam.

EPRDF cadres fought very hard and without any compromise to topple the oppressive and bloody regime of Colonel Mengistu. Hundreds of fighters lost their lives and others were seriously injured, but finally they won in the 28th of May, 1991. They entered Addis Ababa ending one of the bloodiest and fascist regimes in Africa. While we are here today let us remember those who fought tirelessly for the liberation of the Ethiopian people from their oppressors. Indeed, let us remember, Agazi, Muse, Kinfe, Hayelom and the rest of the fighters.

Since its advent to power EPRDF did a lot for the benefit of the people of Ethiopia in the fields of politics, economy and agriculture, social and cultural affairs. As agreed upon in the Ethiopian constitution, the President and the Prime Minister were elected. Free and democratic elections were conducted three times. We in Sudan who were observing these elections as close brothers and friends justify that the elections were fair, free and democratic, despite the allegations of those who place themselves as teachers of everyone.

EPRDF was very keen to develop excellent relations with neighbors of Ethiopia. With the Sudan, however, EPRDF was persistent and adamant that the relations with Sudan should be exemplary. And indeed, they are now! Never in the history of Ethiopia and Sudan were their relations between two countries as excellent as they are today. Suffice to mention that the joint commission between the two countries had been upgraded to presidential level. This is the only joint commission in Sudan and in Ethiopia that enjoys such a very high status.

  • Your Excellency Ato Melese Zenawi,
  • Members of the EPRDF Central Committee,
  • Ladies and gentlemen,

I am here in Mekele with my delegation to assure you once again of our solidarity and support. We are here to convey to you the best regards and wishes of our brothers of your brothers and sisters in Sudan. We came to your beautiful country to express to you, on behalf of the National Congress Party of Sudan, that the National Congress Party will work hand in hand with EPRDF for the betterment, development, prosperity and stability of both Ethiopia and Sudan.

We are here today to assure you that Sudan will never give in, in its freedom fight against the neo-colonialism led by America. And we will defeat the goals of destabilizing our countries and other African countries and will join hands with all freedom fighters in Africa, as we are doing it now with EPRDF leaders.

I wish all the success to this conference, and long live the eternal and fraternal relationship between Sudan and Ethiopia.

Thank you for giving me this chance to attend this national conference.

Thank you very much!
